Floating Circular Staircase, Mt Pleasant

A sculptural floating staircase for a home in Mt Pleasant, Christchurch, designed by Shaw & Shaw Architects and fabricated by our team. Solid oak treads appear to float from the wall, wrapped in a circular surround of slim olive-green flat-bar steel that works as both screen and structure, a drum that holds the curve and guards the open flight.
The flat-bar surround is the standout detail: closely spaced steel bars, painted olive green and rolled to a true circle, engineered to double as a code-compliant balustrade. Precise, rewarding metalwork, and a good example of what considered architectural design and in-house steel fabrication can achieve together.
